Watch Tonight’s Quarterfinal Against Chung Live at 8 pm on Tennis Channel
A determined Frances Tiafoe recorded the second top 10 win of his career with a round of 16 victory over Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro , 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-5 at the ATP World Tour 250 Delray Beach Open in Delray Beach, FL on Thursday.
This was the first win over Del Potro for the JTCC alumnus. Del Potro, who is currently #10 in the ATP world rankings, came into the match having previously defeated Tiafoe at the 2017 ATP 500 Abierto Mexicano in Acapulco and last month at the Australian Open.
The 20-year-old was exceptional under pressure saving 14 out of 16 break points during the two and a half hour contest. He also dug deep to stave off four set points before claiming the opener in a tiebreak.
Tiafoe is through to his second consecutive ATP World Tour quarterfinal following his run to the last eight at the New York Open. He faces world #30 and 2018 Australian Open semifinalist Hyeon Chung from South Korea on Friday. The match will be shown live on Tennis Channel at 8 pm. The two ATP NextGen stars have never previously played at ATP World Tour level.
“Frances is starting to put together a series of deep runs at this level,” said JTCC Senior Director of Tennis, Vesa Ponkka. “The confidence he will have gained from his recent wins should give him a great opportunity to reach the first ATP semifinal of his career tonight.”
