Kudla notches first Grand Slam win

Denis Kudla punched his ticket to the second round at Wimbledon this morning by defeating James Duckworth in five sets

Denis Kudla defeated James Duckworth this morning in five sets (6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 6-1) to advance to the second round at Wimbledon.  The win marks Kudla’s first in a Grand Slam event.  It is now a foregone conclusion that he will vault into the top 100 following the fortnight tournament.

Both Kudla and Duckworth were competing in the Wimbledon main draw for the first time in their careers.

Kudla will play Ivan Dodig of Croatia in the next round.  Dodig defeated 16 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in a closely contested five set match.  Kohlschreiber retired in the fifth due to an unspecified injury.  Check back in tomorrow for a primer on the Kudla v.
