Andrew Fenty Wins Back to Back Championships

Brian Cernoch and William Woodall Reach Yucatan Finals

Sixteen-year-old Andrew Fenty completed a successful two-week trip to Mexico by claiming the doubles crown at the XXX Yucatan Cup Grade 1 ITF with partner Israeli Yshai Oliel following the pair’s triumph at the Aiberto Juvenil Mexico Grade A ITF in Mexico City on November 20th.

Fenty and Oliel were #7 seeds at the Aiberto Juvenil, which is is one of only five Grade A ITF Junior events and is ranked just below the Grand Slams in terms of prestige. The duo survived two match tie breaks en route to the finals where they overcame the American team of Boris Kozlov and Karl Poling 6-4, 6-3.

Fenty and Oliel continued their winning run at the XXX Yucatan Cup by coming through the top half of the draw as #6 seeds. Their progress to the finals included quarterfinal, 4-6, 6-4, 10-4, and semifinal, 6-3, 6-2, victories over the fourth seeds, Alan Fernado Rubio Fierros (MEX)/Duarte Vale (POR), and the seventh seeds, Max Broville (FRA)/Vlad Andrei Dancu (ROU), respectively.

Their opponents in the Championship match were the unseeded JTCC pairing of Brian Cernoch and William Woodall. Cernoch, 17, and Woodall, 16, combined superbly to win through four rounds together. This streak included a notable 6-4, 6-4 semifinal win against #3 seeds from France, Dan Added and Matteo Martineau.

The title decider saw three JTCC players on court and produced a contest worthy of any finals. Fenty/Oliel took the first set 6-4 before Cernoch/Woodall rallied to claim the second 6-2 and send the encounter into a match tiebreaker. There was never more than a couple of points in it before #6 seeds eventually prevailed 10-8 to earn their second title in as many weeks.

“Andrew, Brian and William must be commended for a series of excellent performances throughout the trip,” said Frank Salazar, JTCC Senior Director of High Performance, who was traveling with the group. “They should all now be full of confidence ahead of the upcoming Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl tournaments.”
