The Tobacco Road rivalry is no stranger to tradition.

Following in the footsteps of teammate Hanna Mar, Junior Tennis Champions Center alum and Duke University sophomore Beatrice Capra netted the 2013 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Singles Championship on Monday, October 21. Mar won the same tournament last year.

In the finals, No. 1 seed Capra defeated the No. 2 seed Hayley Carter of rival North Carolina, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.  In 2012, Mar also defeated a Tar Heel to collect the singles title.

“There was really no momentum for me in the first and second sets,” commented Capra to goduke.com.  “I just kept telling myself to keep fighting, make her play every ball and to work hard.  Eventually in the third set I broke her and I got my opportunities to close out that set.  We were having really long points and it was a three and a half hour match today.  Eventually I came out with a win so it was good.”

The final match proved to be the sole litmus test for Capra.  She steamrolled over the competition in the previous rounds as she dropped a measly eight total games in six matches.

“It feels amazing,” said Capra .  “Our whole team has worked real hard for this tournament and I am real happy with the way the team competed throughout the tournament.  Each match I was getting a little bit better and I really wanted to do well here.  I am very happy with the way I competed and the way I played.  It is a big credit to the hard work we have done.”
