Pat Etcheberry visits JTCC

Etchberry
For the past two days, JTCC Senior Advisor Pat Etcheberry trained players and dispensed his fitness knowledge at the Tennis Center.

Etcheberry is a legend in the fitness field.  He started his career as the head trainer the University of Kentucky teams before focusing squarely on devising fitness routines for tennis players.  Among a litany of stars, Pat has trained Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Jim Courier, Jennifer Capritati and Monica Seles.  Etcheberry was quite the athlete himself.  He competed in the 1964 Summer Olympics (in javelin) and was a participant in the Pan American Games from 1967 – 1971.

He fervently believes that a connected mind and body are crucial to success:

I first ascertain what motivates each individual athlete. Through strengthening a person physically, I believe they can also be strengthened mentally. I will work on an athlete’s strengths, but focus even more on their weaknesses, as that’s where there is the most room for improvement. Workouts are sports-specific and intense. The training is such that anything they could face on game day couldn’t be any more challenging than what they have been through in training. Thus the body and mind adapt and respond appropriately at the crucial moments.

Besides his impressive sport resume, Etcheberry has made a dramatic impact in the healthcare industry with his revolutionary strength and conditioning exercises designed for cancer patients.

Pat earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education at the University of Kentucky and his Master’s degree from Georgetown College.

Thank you Pat for visiting and we look forward to seeing you soon!
